Add custom role
You can create custom roles to tailor permissions for specific needs in your organization. Custom roles inherit permissions from a built-in parent role. You can then remove specific permissions from the inherited set to restrict access as needed.
Custom roles can only have permissions removed from the parent role's baseline — new permissions beyond the parent role cannot be added.
Steps to add a custom role
- Select Users and teams > Roles from the left side menu.
- Click Add Custom Role.
- Fill in the following fields:
| Field | Description | Required |
|---|---|---|
| Name | A unique name for the custom role (minimum 3 characters). | Yes |
| Parent Role | The built-in role from which permissions are inherited: Admin, Developer, Team Lead, Pentester, or Manager. | Yes |
| Use Business Units | Enable this to create a role that can be associated with business units, similar to Managers. Only available when the parent role supports it. | No |
| Team Based Access | When enabled, users with this role can only access projects and users associated with the teams they belong to. | No |
- Click Save to create the custom role.
If you're unsure which parent role to select, choose Admin as it has the widest set of permissions. You can then amend the permissions to remove any that aren't needed.
Use Business Units and Team Based Access are mutually exclusive — only one can be enabled at a time.
